Building a Brighter Future for All
Crew 3000 is a volunteer organization and was founded in 2010, with a mission to restore, protect and preserve our ocean ecosystems through education and participation. Diving with a purpose.
A WORD ABOUT US
THE CREW 3000 CORAL FARMING MISSION:
Our mission is to provide scuba divers and the general public a hands-on experience helping to save the ocean’s coral reefs with small manageable coral farms. We have found that people who participate in our program become more educated, more concerned with the ocean health, and start acting, teaching and voting to help promote ocean conservation. We have never met a diver who doesn’t love to engage in coral farming. In fact, the vast majority of our members go on yearly trips with us just for the coral farming.
Crew 3000 members pick a location and dates to go on a drive trip. On some of these trips the Crew partners with universities, dive resorts, dive shops, and conservation clubs to participate in coral farming. The participants then are educated in coral physiology, coral farming techniques, and safety procedures. On many of our trips the participants help assemble either a coral table or one of the many different structures the Crew uses to grow coral. They also help to anchor the coral table on the ocean floor. Since it is impossible to predict which coral colony will successfully adapt to environmental changes, divers take several scouting dives near the selected coral farm site, looking for the most healthy coral colonies that might already be resilient to changing conditions, such as warming and acidifying oceans. When we locate a selected colony we search for broken coral branches within the colony that can be snipped into small 2-4 inch fragments and can be hung from the tables to grow more coral. The corals are then allowed to grow for six months to a year and, when ready, are either transplanted back onto the coral reef or cut into fragments to grow more coral on additional coral tables. Crew 3000’s approach is a non-invasive form of coral farming that is simple to teach and maintain, and easy to get people involved with.
A VISION OF SHARING:
Because of our unique and simple approach, Crew 3000 is creating an international network of resorts, dive shops and universities that want to work with us in creating a coral conservation program. In the Caribbean, we have partnered with resorts and dive shops and we have created and maintain coral farms in Mexico, St. Lucia, and Roatan. The Crew has helped expand, rescue, or performed much needed maintenance on other organization's coral farms in Punta Cana, Bahamas, Florida, and Honduras.
